Plot summary
Thirteen-year-old Meg Murry struggles with bullying and depression four years after her father Alex, a renowned astrophysicist, disappears. Her gifted brother Charles Wallace introduces her to Mrs. Whatsit, who claims the tesseract, a space travel method Alex studied, is real. Meg, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O'Keefe meet Mrs. Who, then the three astral travelers reveal themselves as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. They explain that Alex transported himself across the universe, and they will help the children find him. The Misses lead them through a tesseract to the planet Uriel, where sentient flowers confirm Alex visited. Mrs. Whatsit transforms into a flying creature and carries them, but Calvin nearly falls after noticing the dark planet Camazotz, home of the evil IT.
