Garrett Morris
Biography
Garrett Morris is an American actor, comedian and singer who grew up in New Orleans and studied at the Juilliard School of Music before graduating from Dillard University in 1958. His early work included performances with The Belafonte Folk Singers and parts in Broadway musicals, among them Hallelujah, Baby! and the musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death. In 1975 he joined the original cast of Saturday Night Live, where he remained until 1980 and was its first Black cast member, known for characters such as the Dominican baseball player Chico Escuela. He played a concerned teacher in Cooley High (1975) and Slide the bookmaker in Car Wash (1976). On television he played Jimmy on The Jeffersons and later took the role of Stan Winters on Martin. He also starred as Uncle Junior on The Jamie Foxx Show and played Earl Washington on 2 Broke Girls, and in 2024 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
