Gregg Turkington

Biography

Gregg Turkington is an American comedian, actor, musician and writer who created the anti-comedian persona Neil Hamburger in the 1990s. Born in Darwin in 1967, he first gained attention as publisher of the underground zine Breakfast Without Meat before running the independent label Amarillo Records. He played in bands such as Zip Code Rapists and collaborated with Trey Spruance. As Neil Hamburger, he has released albums on the Drag City label since 1998. Turkington stars with Tim Heidecker in the web series On Cinema, and he has voiced characters on Gravity Falls and other animated shows. His film work includes minor roles in Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), as well as appearances in The Comedy (2012) and Entertainment (2015).

Big break
Turkington created the anti-comedian Neil Hamburger, an album of prank phone calls in 1992 included an early version of the character, and he soon began developing the stand-up persona.
A change of course
In the mid-1980s, Turkington rose to prominence as publisher of the underground zine Breakfast Without Meat. Through feature articles, the zine brought punk respectability to "square" musical artists such as Tiny Tim, Jimmy Webb, the 101 Strings, and Richard Harris.
Behind the camera
In the early 1990s, Turkington ran the Amarillo Records label, which put out works by numerous artists from the post-punk avant-garde music scene in San Francisco.
A role that slipped away
Turkington was rumored to appear in Greg Mottola's 2011 ensemble comedy film Paul in his Neil Hamburger persona, but he did not appear in it.
