Plot summary
1431, in Normandy, during the Hundred Years' War. Jeanne d'Arc, the Maid of Orléans, is a peasant girl who has led French troops against the English. Soldiers of a rival French faction capture her; she is imprisoned on a charge of heresy and brought to Rouen, where a church court under English control tries her. From the start, English representatives make plain what sentence they expect. The judges interrogate her repeatedly about her faith and about the mission she insists God assigned to her. Jeanne firmly holds that this mission was assigned to her by God, and her faith in it does not waver.

- Robert Bresson spoke unfavourably of Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 film, which covered the same subject, calling its actors' performances "horrible buffoonery".
- Rather than invent dialogue, Bresson drew the film's screenplay from the transcriptions of Joan of Arc's trial and her rehabilitation.
