Plot summary
Secret Service agent Mike Banning trains at a paramilitary facility run by Wade Jennings, his former Army Ranger commander and the head of Salient Global. Banning takes painkillers for chronic back pain from old combat injuries, and he keeps his migraines and insomnia from President Allan Trumbull and his wife Leah. Trumbull selects Banning to replace the retiring director David Gentry. During a fishing trip, armed drones kill the agents guarding Trumbull, and Banning pulls the president into the water and to safety. Trumbull lies in a coma, and Vice President Martin Kirby is sworn in as acting president. Falsified evidence ties Banning to the attack, and FBI agent Helen Thompson questions him before he is arrested.
