Plot summary
Dr. Phil Loder teaches economics as an adjunct and has long wanted a house of his own. His real estate broker Dell tells him to look at smaller places. Then Phil reads an advertisement he cannot pass up: Astrid Fanelli, a lonely widow, will part with her five-million-dollar home for $240,000 in cash, keep living in it for the rest of her days, and leave it to the buyer, who moves into the modest upper level. Phil sells off his possessions and empties his savings to enter the agreement. Phil finds Astrid prickly, and she presents a Greek plumber called Boris and a brokerage lawyer called Maggie as two of her children, which makes him worry that they will fight the will.
