Biography

Jeffery Kissoon, born in Trinidad, is a British actor and theater director. He emigrated to London with his parents as a young child, and at the Christopher Wren School he joined a student drama group before making his first film appearance in Like You, Like Me in 1970. Trained as a drama teacher, he has nonetheless acted professionally since the early 1970s, joining the Glasgow Citizens Theatre Company in 1972. Keith Hack brought him into the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 1974 Tempest, where he played Caliban, and he later took the role of Karna in Peter Brook's The Mahabharata. His television work includes Space 1999 and EastEnders, and he appeared in Dirty Pretty Things (2002). His lead role in Mark Norfolk's Ham and the Piper earned him best actor awards at the Peloponnesian International and Eko International film festivals, and he also directs theater and sits on the boards of Shared Experience and the Warehouse Theatre in Croydon.

  1. First role

    Kissoon joined the student drama group at the Christopher Wren School in Shepherd's Bush. His first acting appearance came in 1970, in Like You, Like Me, an inter-racial romance, under Robert Tanitch and Eric Rickman.

  2. A first

    Kissoon directed a Hamlet adapted by Mark Norfolk, staged in an Egyptian theme for Black Theatre Live and toured nationally in the UK. It was the first all black company in Britain to perform Shakespeare's tragedy, with an all black creative team.

  3. Behind the award

    Kissoon won the Best Lead Actor Award at the 2012 Peloponnesian International Film Festival for the lead role in Mark Norfolk's film Ham and the Piper, and later won Best Actor at the Eko International Film Festival in Nigeria for the same performance.

  4. A first

    In 2008 Kissoon took part in "Broken Chain", one segment of Radio 4's The City Speaks. That production, a team effort with Film London and Arts Council England, is credited as the first "feature film for radio".
