Plot summary
Amber Appleton is a high school senior who lives with her mother, Becky. After Becky's boyfriend Oliver turns abusive, the two of them sleep in the school bus Becky drives, and Amber keeps their situation to herself. She teaches an ESL class, spends time at a retirement community with a resident named Joan, and organizes the school's annual variety show, whose proceeds go to charity. Her father studied at Carnegie Mellon before his death, and Amber is invited to audition for its drama program. Becky encourages her to use the money they had saved for rent to pay for the flight to Pittsburgh.
