Plot summary
An alien force nicknamed the Heavies overwhelms Earth's nations, and the United Nations disbands in favor of a unified military front, the USDF. The USDF drives the invaders off the planet, though thousands of their troops remain behind, and defensive satellites are believed to keep a second wave away. In 2033, two embedded journalists travel with reinforcements to Outpost 37, one of the last USDF positions in a demilitarized zone on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The newcomers are hazed and settle into the outpost's routine. Villagers assault the base and a soldier is wounded and sent away; requests for supplies are refused, but Hans, a German volunteer, arrives as his replacement. Saleem, a local the outpost once rescued, reports that villagers are finding their animals mutilated, and the captain sends a detail back with him.
