Carlo Croccolo

Biography

Carlo Croccolo was an Italian screenwriter, director, voice artist and actor who started out on the radio before moving into films. Born in Naples, he made his film debut in The Firemen of Viggiù (1949) and went on to appear in more than 100 films, with his first television work following in 1956. He was best known for his collaboration with Totò, mainly in the 1950s and 1960s, and onstage he often appeared in work staged by Eduardo De Filippo and Giorgio Strehler. He also worked as a dubbing artist, providing the Italian voice of Oliver Hardy in redubs of Laurel and Hardy and, from 1957, dubbing Totò in some of his films. In 1989 he won a David di Donatello for his supporting performance in 'O Re, and wider international recognition came with In Love and War (1996), which Richard Attenborough directed. He died in 2019.

A role that slipped away
In the early 1950s, Croccolo took over from Alberto Sordi as the Italian voice of Oliver Hardy in Laurel and Hardy redubs released between 1951 and 1953, working alongside Fiorenzo Fiorentini, who voiced Stan Laurel.
