Paolo Stoppa
Biography
Paolo Stoppa was an Italian actor born in Rome who started out on stage in 1927 and entered films in 1932. At the Teatro Eliseo between 1938 and 1940 he took classical and modern parts. After World War II he collaborated with director Luchino Visconti, and their stagings of Chekhov, Shakespeare and Goldoni were widely praised. His screen career ran from 1932 until he retired in 1983 and included around 194 roles, among them Rocco and His Brothers (1960), Miracle in Milan (1951), Becket (1964) and All My Friends Part 2 (1982); he also appeared in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Television brought him popularity in the 1970s through adaptations of crime novels by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Augusto De Angelis. He was also a noted dubbing artist, starting in the 1930s with Fred Astaire and later dubbing Richard Widmark, Kirk Douglas and Paul Muni. He died in 1988.
