Plot summary
Kate Kassell trained in fashion and dreams of designing for couturier houses, but no one will hire the daughter of Lee Kassell, whose company sells clothes inspired by those same designers. Her father, from whom she is estranged, asks her to work at Kassell Fashion, and she agrees with little enthusiasm. Her stepmother, Elise, and stepsisters, Simone and Tannis, have no wish to see her advance, and they put her to work sorting the contents of a storeroom full of buttons. Daniel, a shoe designer in the next room, talks with her and tells her to keep at her drawing. She sketches a design to improve the company's plain line.
