Plot summary
Kelly Taylor sings and waits tables at a bar in Texas, where local cowboys come to listen. Her college classmates Alexa and Kaya talk her into a spring break trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and she goes to escape a job she dislikes. Justin Bell is spending the same vacation there with two friends, Brandon and Eddie, who promote parties. At a beach concert Kelly and Justin meet, and Justin and Brandon give Eddie advice about dating while Eddie waits to meet Lizzie, a woman he has been emailing for months. Kelly finds the usual spring break pursuits demeaning, but her attention stays on Justin, and his on her.

- Clarkson has said that before the film went into production she tearfully pleaded with the creator of American Idol to be relieved from the contractual obligation to star in it, and that she has always disliked From Justin to Kelly.
- Clarkson said she took part only because she was contractually obligated: "I knew when I read the script it was going to be real, real bad, but when I won, I signed that piece of paper, and I could not get out of it."
- Some theater chains were so concerned when distributor 20th Century Fox announced it would release the film on VHS and DVD a mere six weeks after its opening weekend that they threatened not to screen it at all.
- The choreography was considered so bad that a special Golden Raspberry "Governor's Award" was created as an excuse to present the film with a Razzie.
- Made on a $12 million budget, the film opened with $2,715,848 from 2,001 theaters in the United States and Canada, ranking #11, and had grossed just $4,928,883 domestically by the end of its run on July 24, 2003.
- The whole film was made in roughly two and a half months: three weeks went to actor readings of the script alongside ongoing revisions, followed by rehearsals for dances and singing, before a six-week shooting schedule began.
- A critical and commercial failure, the film received the Golden Raspberry Award for "Worst 'Musical' of Our First 25 Years" in 2005 and has gained a reputation as one of the worst movies ever made.
- R. J. Helton and Christina Christian, both former American Idol competitors, paid visits to the film's set, but neither of them appears in the final cut of the movie.
