Plot summary
In Beaufort, North Carolina, Landon Carter runs with the in crowd at his high school, and a prank he pulls with his friends leaves another student severely injured and evidence of underage drinking on school grounds. Called before the principal, Landon takes the option that keeps him enrolled: after-school work with the janitorial staff, tutoring younger students, and a part in the spring play. There he notices Jamie Sullivan, a classmate since kindergarten whose father is the local minister; she wears modest dresses, owns one sweater, and makes no effort to attract attention. Landon has trouble learning his lines, and Jamie, also in the play, offers to help him practice at her house after school, on one condition: he must not fall in love with her.

At the end of the novel, unlike the film, it is ambiguous whether Jamie died. Sparks had written the book knowing she would die, yet had "grown to love Jamie Sullivan", and chose the solution that best described what he felt about his own sister.- Daryl Hannah, who wore a brown wig as her character, had received a collagen injection in her lips which went awry and caused noticeable swelling, though by the end of filming the symptoms were less obvious.
- The inspiration for the 1999 novel A Walk to Remember was Nicholas Sparks' own sister, who died of breast cancer in 2000.
- The writer's sister met a man who wanted to marry her, "even when he knew she was sick, even when he knew that she might not make it".
- Many of the film's sets came from the television series Dawson's Creek, particularly the school, the hospital and Landon's home.
- Moore could work only 10 hours a day because she was a minor, and yet the total shooting time for the film was originally set at just 50 days.
