Biography

Astro, who now records as Stro, is an American rapper, producer and actor who first drew notice competing on the debut season of The X Factor USA in 2011, where L.A. Reid mentored him and he reached the top seven before being eliminated. Born in Brownsville, he began rapping at ten after his mother offered studio time for better grades, and went on to release singles and mixtapes, earning a BET Award nomination in the Young Stars category. He made his acting debut in Person of Interest and then played Tuck Simms in Earth to Echo (2014), TJ in A Walk Among the Tombstones and Dash Hosney in the Fox series Red Band Society. He later appeared as Calvin Walker in See You Yesterday (2019), which Spike Lee produced and Stefon Bristol directed.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Stro was originally cast as Christopher McKay on HBO's Euphoria but left during filming because of the show's explicit content, and was replaced by his Earth to Echo co-star Algee Smith.

  2. About the name

    Under the alias Basquiat, Astro released two beat tapes, "Masterminds" and "New World Art." Both he and his friend Laron, who used the name Keith on the tapes, contributed productions.
