Plot summary
Vicky Austin and her sister Suzy and little brother Rob arrive on Seven Bay Island to visit their grandfather, the retired Reverend Eaton, who is seriously ill but insists that nothing is wrong. Her parents expect her to study science. Zachary Gray, the rich and emotionally troubled boy she met the summer before, turns up again to renew their acquaintance. Adam Eddington, seventeen, asks her to help with his research project on a dolphin called Basil. Working with the animal, she finds she can communicate with it and with its mate without words, and wonders whether the same link reaches Adam.
