Plot summary
In Billings, Montana, in 1968, a locally produced children's show pairs magician Happy Herb with his wisecracking marionette, Froggy Doo. The puppet is taken and held for ransom, and the FBI is called in. Elliott Plumm has decided he is too grown up for the show, though his five-year-old brother Rocky still watches it. Their father, Mick, is a recovering alcoholic and a former boxer without work, and he believes Elliott's birth kept him from the Olympic Games twelve years earlier. Their mother, Roxie, is the only earner in the family. Haley Dubois then moves in next door with her father, the new deputy sheriff, and she is gripped by the theft. Elliott falls for Haley and agrees to help her and Rocky find Froggy Doo before two federal agents, Hardigan and Brinkman, can.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The real-life kidnapping of Froggy Doo, a character on the Happy Herb & Froggy Doo show in Billings, Montana, is the basis for the film's story. Screenwriter T. J. Lynch grew up there watching the show and interviewed Herb McAllister, the actor who played Happy Herb and voiced Froggy Doo, to research the script.
- Financing fell apart when a foreign film company pulled out just weeks after the main leads were cast. Actor Lisa Guerrero and her husband, Scott Erickson, then formed Home Team Productions and partnered with producer Frank Antonelli's Fairplay Pictures to finance the film.
- Producers scouted several U.S. states and Canadian locations, but chose Montana over South Carolina after winning support from the governor, state financial incentives and encouragement from local freelance movie production workers.
