Plot summary
James is 23 and a writer. He is also an alcoholic and a drug addict, and his options have come down to treatment or death. After waking on a plane with a battered face and no memory of the weeks before, he checks into a rehabilitation center in Minnesota for two months of detox and therapy. Detox is agonizing work, and mending his body is not the whole of what is asked of him there. He connects with kindred spirits, people who are also fighting for a better life, and through that connection he sets about healing his broken soul.
