Plot summary
Hercule Poirot has retired to Venice after the war and keeps the former police officer Vitale at his side as a bodyguard. The mystery writer Ariadne Oliver talks him into attending a Halloween séance at the palazzo of the opera singer Rowena Drake, hoping he will prove that the medium, Joyce Reynolds, is a fraud. Rowena has engaged Joyce to reach her daughter Alicia, who is said to have killed herself after her engagement to the chef Maxime Gerard ended. Other guests include Rowena's housekeeper Olga, the doctor Leslie Ferrier and his son Leopold, and Desdemona Holland, who assists Joyce.
