Louise Brooks
Biography
Louise Brooks was an American film actress of the 1920s and 1930s who was born in Cherryvale, Kansas, and became an emblem of flapper-era style. She started as a dancer with the Denishawn company at 15, then danced in George White's Scandals and the Ziegfeld Follies, where a Paramount producer, Walter Wanger, noticed her and signed her to a five-year contract. After small parts, she took the lead in Beggars of Life (1928) and appeared in A Girl in Every Port (1928) and The Canary Murder Case (1929). In 1929 she went to Germany, where G. W. Pabst directed her in Pandora's Box (1929) and Diary of a Lost Girl (1929), which made her an international star. In later years she wrote essays on cinema and published the memoir Lulu in Hollywood in 1982, and she died in 1985.

A role that slipped away
In the spring of 1924, St. Denis fired Brooks from the troupe after a conflict, saying in front of the other members that Brooks wanted life handed to her on a silver salver. Brooks later titled the tenth and final chapter of a planned autobiographical novel "The Silver Salver."
First role
In 1925, Brooks appeared on screen for the first time, in the silent film The Street of Forgotten Men. She was not credited for that role.
Big break
Brooks starred in Pandora's Box, and her performance in it made her a star. Pabst had rejected Marlene Dietrich as "too old and too obvious" when casting the part of Lulu.
