Plot summary
Sir Paul, an art critic and writer, lives alone in a large house after a car crash took his sight. He needs an amanuensis to take down the book he intends as his last, his autobiography. Several candidates fail to suit him; Jane Ryder, direct and intelligent, does not. She moves into the house, where she meets Mrs. Kilbride, the cook and housekeeper. Sir Paul says he fears enclosed spaces and the dark, and wants the lamps in the house lit at the hours a normal household would use them. He dictates the book, which he calls A Closed Book, and Jane types it, and he asks her to buy him a jigsaw of a specific painting. Then small changes begin in the house.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Raúl Ruiz said he received a letter at the beginning of shooting reminding him that A Closed Book was not "a film of an auteur" but "a normal feature", and that afterwards the script changed every day, altered by the actors, the producer and money problems.
- Ruiz said A Closed Book had to be shot in about three weeks, which left him no time for many cuts, so he filmed it with no close-ups and no shot-reverse shots.
