Trailer

Plot summary

Jess lives in Florida and raises her son Tommy, who is autistic, on her own. Her friend Greg asks her to join a Saturday sail on his yacht with his deckhand Victor, the married couple Downey and Sally, and Sally's friend Heather. The wind dies, a storm strikes, and the yacht overturns; Heather is swept away. The survivors climb aboard the liner Aeolus, which seems deserted, though they had glimpsed a figure on its deck. Jess has the odd sense that she has been on this ship before.

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Triangle (2009)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Smith developed a screenplay for a horror film set aboard an ocean liner, citing The Twilight Zone and Back to the Future as inspirations for the time loop narrative, and in particular the final sequence in which Marty McFly observes his future self.
  • To edit the sequence in which the camera passes through the mirror "following" the actress, Smith acknowledged having been inspired by one of the final shots of The Woman in the Window, by Fritz Lang.
  • The film is also based in part on the story of Sisyphus, a figure from Greek mythology cursed to repeatedly push a boulder up a hill without ever successfully reaching the top.
  • The writer-director wanted to maintain a link between the two places, so he baptized the housing estate where Jess lives "Sunshine State", a nickname used for both Florida and Queensland.
  • The director chose Melissa George for the lead role after seeing her in the television series In Treatment, where she plays a young woman who feels a deep attraction for her psychotherapist.
  • A British-Australian co-production, Triangle was financed by the UK Film Council, which awarded £1.6 million ($2.8 million) of public money from the National Lottery fund towards the development, production and distribution of the film.
  • The sets include the exterior of a cruise ship, which Smith insisted on building as he considered it important not to overuse green screens.
  • Smith cited The Shining, from 1980, as a visual inspiration for the appearance of the ship's interiors in the film.
