Plot summary
Marianne Lane, a rock singer, is spending a holiday at an isolated villa on Pantelleria with Paul De Smedt, a filmmaker. Surgery has left her without a voice, and she communicates in signs and whispers, while Paul is also in recovery. Then Harry Hawkes, a music producer and Marianne's former lover, arrives without an invitation, bringing his daughter Penelope, who says she is 22. Harry treats the villa as his own, filling it with friends and excursions that irritate Paul and bore Penelope, and Marianne is drawn to him again. Neither she nor Paul speaks Italian.
