Plot summary
Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth plays guitar in Mayhem, a black metal band he founded with bassist Necrobutcher in Norway. With drummer Hellhammer in place, they bring in a Swedish vocalist, Dead, whose stage act involves cutting himself, bleeding on the audience and throwing pig heads. Euronymous meets Ann-Marit, a woman from the metal community, and is drawn to her. At a concert filmed by their friend Metalion, the band crosses paths with Kristian, a shy fan Euronymous treats with disdain. Euronymous starts a record label and opens Helvete, a shop that becomes a hub for black metal fans, and Kristian reappears there calling himself Varg Vikernes. The group around the shop becomes known as the Black Circle.

- The burning churches in the film were built at half the size of the real ones, out of wood from the sets of Blade Runner 2049, which was filming in Budapest at the same time as Lords of Chaos.
- Varg Vikernes said he, Mayhem and Darkthrone all refused the filmmakers the rights to their music, but director Jonas Åkerlund said in 2018 that they had secured the rights to Mayhem's music anyway.
- The shoot for the film's live performance scenes also produced Metallica's music video "ManUNkind", starring the cast of Lords of Chaos.
- Rory Culkin grew his hair out for the role of Euronymous, lost faith in the film during the years of delay and cut it, only to be told two weeks later that production was starting.
- Hungarian black metal band Bornholm served as consultants, teaching Rory Culkin and the other actors how to play their instruments so their performances would look believable.
- The film shows Dead with a cat hanging in his room, though the real Dead never killed any cats, only chasing them off for fun.
- Varg Vikernes called Lords of Chaos "made-up crap" and objected to being played by a Jewish actor and to plot elements, calling the depiction "character murder".
