Plot summary
At the Opéra Populaire in 1881, rehearsals for Hannibal are interrupted when resident soprano Carlotta walks out, blaming the Phantom who has troubled the company for three years. The retiring owner's successors, Firmin and André, allow chorus girl Christine Daaé to audition, and her voice dazzles them. Christine tells Meg Giry that an invisible Angel of Music has been teaching her; that teacher is in fact the Phantom, a disfigured genius hidden beneath the opera house. Raoul, the company's new patron, recognizes Christine from his childhood and visits her dressing room. A jealous voice condemns Raoul's intrusion, and a masked face appears in Christine's mirror.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Royal Albert Hall could not take the full original show, so the Phantom's chandelier did not fall as it does on stage: in this production it exploded instead, and other elements were toned down and simplified.
- Principal understudies Simon Shorten and Katie Hall play the Phantom and Christine for the walkway descent in "The Phantom of the Opera"; for the DVD and Blu-ray release, footage of Sierra Boggess as Christine singing the song was shot at one rehearsal and cut into the film.
- Designer Matt Kinley first planned a concert-style staging like the Les Misérables 25th anniversary concert at the O2 Arena, but Cameron Mackintosh insisted on a fully staged show, believing with Andrew Lloyd Webber that anything less would not work.
- The Royal Albert Hall's balconies were used to build the uprights of an opera house proscenium with boxes on each side, and the orchestra played on a raised platform backed by a screen onto which the opera's sets were projected.
