Plot summary
The Netherlands of 2040 lies largely under water, and those who escaped the flooding have gathered in Limburg, the last refuge, hoping to rebuild the life they knew. Nothing in that sanctuary is left to chance. Doctor Frank, a gene doctor, helps parents choose the best genes and brains for the child they want. Alecto, an artificial intelligence that controls everything and teaches itself, is at hand for every decision, from lunch to love. Partners are found exactly as each person dreams of them, and virtual rooms offer better sex. With data governing everything and coincidence gone, people have less and less of a part to play.
