Plot summary
Survivors of an epidemic that turns people into the infected go by the names of the places they came from and try not to get attached to anyone they meet. Columbus, a former college student in Austin, lives by a list of rules for staying alive and sets out for Ohio to learn whether his parents are still there. Tallahassee, who hates the infected and enjoys killing them, picks him up in an armored truck and drives him east. They run into Wichita and Little Rock, sisters who work cons to take what they need, and the four of them travel toward Pacific Playland, an amusement park in Los Angeles reported to be free of the infected.

- After considering names like Sylvester Stallone, Mark Hamill, Dwayne Johnson and Matthew McConaughey for the cameo, the actor who was actually cast dropped out just a week before filming, so Woody Harrelson personally called around and landed Bill Murray for the part instead.
- Woody Harrelson only agreed to star on four conditions, one requiring the set to run in an environmentally conscious way and another daring director Ruben Fleischer to give up dairy for a week, which Fleischer likened to asking an alcoholic not to drink; he ended up sticking to a full vegetarian diet for 11 months.
