Plot summary
Joy Griffin lives in Chicago in 1968 with her husband Will and their teenage daughter Charlotte. Pregnant again, she begins having spells of fatigue and faints at home. At the hospital she and Will learn the pregnancy is causing congestive heart failure, and that she will die unless she delivers early or ends it. The hospital's all-male board unanimously turns down her request for an abortion. Desperate, Joy visits a back-alley clinic and backs out at the door. Outside, she finds an advertisement for the Jane Collective, an underground women's network that arranges safer abortions. A former patient, Gwen, escorts her to a clinic outside the city, where a gynecologist named Dean performs the procedure, and Joy meets the group's founder, Virginia.
