Plot summary
The experiment that psychology professor Philip Zimbardo designs at Stanford University in 1971 tests the hypothesis that social roles, not individual personality, cause people's behavior. He selects male students for a fourteen-day prison simulation in the basement of Jordan Hall, the psychology department building, where they earn fifteen dollars a day. The parts of guard and prisoner are assigned at random to the participants. Daniel Culp is given the number 8612, Peter Mitchell 819, and Gavin Lee 3401. Zimbardo takes a part in the simulation as well, and as it unfolds, the students cast as guards begin to treat the prisoners abusively.
