Plot summary

Francesca Kinsolving marries Matthew after a short courtship and is widowed two weeks later when he dies in a plane crash in Vietnam. Heavily pregnant and with no reply to the letters she sent his relatives, she takes a bus from Los Angeles to rural Minnesota to meet his mother. Mrs. Kinsolving receives her coldly, calls her a gold-digger, questions whether Matthew fathered the child and says she wants nothing to do with either of them. The car will not start in a light snowstorm, so Francesca sleeps at the house. By morning the storm has become a blizzard, and she is stuck there for days.
