David Oxley

David Oxley was an English actor whose film, television and stage work spanned 28 years. Born in Wellington in 1920, he studied drama at the Central School of Dramatic Art from 1946 and appeared at Stratford early in his career. He was best known for Saint Joan (1957), as Gilles de Rais, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), as Sir Hugo Baskerville, and Ill Met by Moonlight (1957), as Captain W. Stanley Moss, the last drawn from the true story of the 1944 kidnap of General Kreipe. He was noted for a commanding presence and a voice that could fill a theater without microphones, heard to best effect as Baskerville. His other films included Bonjour Tristesse (1958), Life at the Top (1965), House of the Living Dead (1974) and Yesterday's Enemy (1959), and on television he appeared in Danger Man (1960). In 1961 he toured New Zealand as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. He died in 1985.
