Plot summary
Emily leaves on a road trip with her friend Leslie, frustrated with a boyfriend she believes may have cheated. Emily drives the Mustang while Leslie drinks beer, and at a fork Leslie makes the case for a route called Devil's Pass, which Emily agrees to after hesitating. They end up stuck behind a foul-smelling tow truck that is towing a stranded couple's station wagon. When the driver refuses to let them by, Leslie swears at him. The truck appears again at a gas station, where Emily catches sight of only the driver's boots. The attendant warns that the Mustang's oil is low, but the women drive off rather than risk a confrontation. The truck tails them on the highway, and when Emily slows to let it pass, the driver waves her into oncoming traffic.

- Writer-director Micheal Bafaro came up with the concept for Wrecker when he overheard two women arguing at a remote gas station, and he was also inspired by the films Duel, The Vanishing and Breakdown.
- Bafaro took the choice never to reveal the tow truck driver from Duel, saying that keeping the driver unseen makes Wrecker "more thrilling".
- Anna Hutchison was a fan of Duel but said it focused entirely on males; she was drawn to the Wrecker script because it has more of a focus on females.
