Plot summary
In 1933 Jesse Owens enrolls at Ohio State University, the first of his family to attend college. Some white athletes there make his place difficult, and coach Larry Snyder, a former Olympic competitor, takes him on, finding speed that needs work on technique. Snyder tells him the 1936 Games in Berlin could be within reach. Owens hesitates, uneasy about racial propaganda in Nazi Germany, while the American Olympic Committee weighs a boycott until Joseph Goebbels promises that athletes of any race may compete. Owens also supports his girlfriend Ruth and their young daughter, and a service station job that clashes with training leads Snyder to arrange a no-show position. The NAACP presses him to stay away from Berlin.
