Plot summary
Diana is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and lives on Themyscira, a hidden island of Amazon warriors. Her aunt Antiope trains her in combat. In 1918 she rescues Steve Trevor, an American pilot and Allied spy, after his plane crashes near the island. German soldiers pursuing him land on Themyscira, and the Amazons fight them off. Steve tells Diana about a global war and about a notebook he stole from Dr. Isabel Maru, a chemist developing a deadlier poison gas for General Erich Ludendorff. Diana believes Ares, the god of war, is behind the conflict. She takes the god-killer sword, the lasso, and her armor, then leaves with Steve. In London they deliver the notebook, and Diana translates it, learning the gas is intended for the Western Front. Steve recruits Sameer, Charlie, and Chief Napi to help stop it.

Patty Jenkins said Warner Bros. forced her to change the final act of Wonder Woman near the end of production: she had wanted Diana to confront Sir Patrick without him becoming Ares, but the studio demanded Ares appear.- Lebanon banned Wonder Woman in May 2017 after the Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel objected to Gal Gadot's service in the Israel Defense Forces, and Algeria pulled it from a film festival days later. Lebanon had not banned Gadot's earlier Fast & Furious films.
- Wonder Woman became the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman, overtaking Kung Fu Panda 2 and Mamma Mia!, and held that record until Hi, Mom in 2021 and Barbie in 2023.
- Reshoots took place in November 2016 while Gal Gadot was five months pregnant, and a green cloth was placed over her belly so it could be edited out during post-production.
- Production designer Aline Bonetto and location manager Charles Somers considered 47 countries as possible locations for Themyscira before settling on the Cilento Coast, a stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Italy's Province of Salerno.
- Gal Gadot trained six hours a day for six months for the role, gaining 17 pounds and taking lessons in swordsmanship, Kung Fu, kickboxing, capoeira and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. She said it was more intense than her Israeli army training.
- Nicole Kidman was in negotiations for Queen Hippolyta but could not commit because of Big Little Lies, and Charlize Theron turned the part down; Connie Nielsen got it after Zack Snyder pushed Patty Jenkins to meet her despite Jenkins thinking Nielsen was too tough.
- Chris Pine had no interest in playing Steve Trevor and felt the part was "second fiddle", but changed his mind after Patty Jenkins described Wonder Woman as a romance.
