Plot summary
Elphaba Thropp, born green, goes with her younger sister Nessarose to Shiz University on Nessarose's first day. Because Nessarose uses a wheelchair, the staff patronize her, and Elphaba's angry flare of magic draws the attention of Madame Morrible, the Dean of Sorcery Studies. Morrible enrolls Elphaba and offers to teach her sorcery herself. Elphaba agrees, since she has always wanted to meet the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Her roommate, the popular Galinda Upland, is also set on studying with Morrible, and the two clash from the start. In history class Elphaba meets Dr. Dillamond, a talking goat and one of Shiz's few remaining Animal professors, who faces unfair treatment.

- Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, objected to an edit of the film's poster that hid her eyes, saying "to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me" and calling it "deeply hurtful"; she noted she looked down the barrel of the camera because "without words we communicate with our eyes."
- Mattel apologized after boxes and instruction sheets for its Wicked dolls carried the address of the adult film studio Wicked Pictures, wicked.com, instead of the film's official website; the company was later sued by a mother in South Carolina over the error.
- Early in the shoot, paparazzi flew over the Munchkinland set at Ivinghoe, England, by hang glider with GoPro cameras attached to their feet, trying to leak photos and videos from the set.
- Ariana Grande first auditioned for the part of Elphaba because a miscommunication led director Jon M. Chu to believe she was interested in that role rather than Glinda.
- The song vocals were recorded live on set at the insistence of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and Jon M. Chu took inspiration from Steven Spielberg's 1991 film Hook for practical effects, including nine million tulips planted around the Munchkinland set.
- In the 1990s Universal heard a pitch for a film of Gregory Maguire's novel from actress Demi Moore, producer Suzanne Todd and writer Linda Woolverton; Whoopi Goldberg, Claire Danes, Salma Hayek and Laurie Metcalf were considered for the lead roles, along with Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson and Nicole Kidman.
- Wicked was pulled from some theaters in Kuwait over "public ethics", and the conservative Christian group One Million Moms called for a US boycott, claiming the film "promotes witchcraft and pushes the LGBTQ agenda on families, particularly children".
- By December 29, 2024, Wicked had surpassed the 2008 film Mamma Mia! to break the Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing musical film adaptation of all time.
