Plot summary
C is a musician who lives in a small house in Dallas, Texas, with his wife M. She is keen to move out; he is reluctant to leave, and the disagreement brings tension between them. M tells him that she moved often as a child and hid small notes wherever she lived. One night a loud bang sounds from the piano, and neither of them can find what caused it. C is then killed in a car accident near the house, and M covers his body with a sheet at the hospital.

- The ghost's sheet costume proved harder than expected: even a king-size bed sheet does not fully cover an adult man, so Casey Affleck wore extra garments under the fabric, and the crew resorted to some "puppeteering" to keep the eyes in place.
- The house where most of the film takes place was picked by David Lowery because it closely resembled the first house he lived in with his wife; because it was about to be demolished, the crew was allowed to use it for free.
- Some shots of the ghost, done during pickups and reshoots, do not feature Casey Affleck at all: the film's art director, David Pink, stood in for him because he had a similar build.
- Lowery chose the film's atypical 1.33:1 aspect ratio partly because he felt its boxiness amplified the claustrophobia of someone trapped in a box for eternity.
- David Lowery began writing the screenplay after an argument with his wife about moving back to Texas, writing the argument down out of his own attachment to physical spaces, then combined it with his idea for a man in a rudimentary ghost costume.
- The film was shot in secret and not officially announced until November 2016, because the filmmakers did not know how the final product would turn out.
