Plot summary
At a subway station, Sandra Thorner picks up a ringing public telephone and dies, her eyes bleeding, when a high-pitched tone rises on the line. Her parents cannot accept the loss. Nat Bridger, an ecology professor, visits the Thorner home, and when a businessman is electrocuted by the phone he is using, Nat takes his questions to Lt. Meara. Sandra's death was recorded as a heart attack. Nat wants to know why the subway phone was repaired, is turned away, then reaches a supervisor and meets Ridley Taylor. Mrs. Andersen is killed at her telephone that night, and Connie Lawson dies at hers.

- Murder by Phone was preceded by a novel, Phone Call, written by the film's screenwriters Michael Butler and Dennis Shryack with author Jon Messman and published in 1979, three years before the film version; it is never credited in the film's credits.
- John Barry's score for the film is electronic, played entirely with synthesisers, which was a rarity for him; he composed and conducted it, but Jonathan Elias and John Petersen performed it, and Elias later worked with Barry on Jagged Edge and A View to a Kill.
