Plot summary
The starship is bound through space when its systems fail catastrophically on Christmas Eve in 2169. Eight people, passengers and crew, climb into an escape pod and are flung clear moments before the larger vessel blows apart, killing everyone left behind. Adrift, they send a distress call and wait for a rescue ship. Days pass and conditions inside the pod worsen: the air thins, the heat fades, and food and drinking water run low. The eight argue about how to stretch what remains, and whether a badly hurt crewmate who consumes far more of their stores than anyone else should be kept alive. Among those aboard are Director Banks, Claire St. John, Parker, Kane, Rena Jahnusia, Mayvene, Terman and Q-Three.
