Plot summary
John Cale works for the Capitol Police and is assigned to Speaker Eli Raphelson, whose nephew he saved during his service in Afghanistan. He wants to impress his daughter Emily, an 11-year-old who follows politics closely, so he interviews for the Secret Service detail that protects President James Sawyer. Carol Finnerty, a college acquaintance, conducts the interview and judges him unqualified. Cale tells Emily the interview went well and takes her on a White House tour. President Sawyer is proposing a peace treaty that would withdraw troops from the Middle East. A bomb collapses the Capitol dome, the city goes into lockdown, and armed mercenaries overrun the White House, taking the tour group hostage. Cale, cut off from Emily, slips away to search for her.
