Michael Gwynn

Biography

Michael Gwynn was an English actor whose work in stage, film, and television lasted about forty years. Born in Bath, he was perhaps best remembered for the first episode of Fawlty Towers, a BBC comedy, in 1975, playing the conman Lord Melbury, who humiliated Basil Fawlty. For Hammer Films he appeared in The Camp on Blood Island (1958) and Never Take Sweets from a Stranger (1960), and he took the role of a version of Frankenstein's monster in The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958). He also played a priest who battled Count Dracula in Scars of Dracula (1970) and had a lead part in Village of the Damned (1960). For Caedmon Records he performed in adaptations of Cyrano de Bergerac as Le Bret and Julius Caesar as Casca, both starring Ralph Richardson, and he was Joe Gargery in a 1959 BBC serial of Great Expectations. Gwynn died in 1976.

On Caedmon Records, Gwynn took the part of Le Bret in Cyrano de Bergerac and Casca in Julius Caesar. Ralph Richardson had the title role in both of these play adaptations.
