Plot summary
Léna, a Jewish woman, is detained in France by the Vichy authorities and risks being sent to Germany. Michel, one of the camp guards, proposes marriage as a way to save her, and the two of them walk over the Alps into Italy. Once the war is over the couple makes a home in Lyon, where Michel runs a garage and Léna brings up their two daughters. She gets to know Madeleine, another mother, at a school event; Madeleine is married and has a son. The women grow close, and the two husbands like each other, though both men privately resent the tie between the wives. The friends intend to open a dress shop together.
