Plot summary
In occupied France, Philippe Gerbier, a civil engineer, heads a Resistance cell. Vichy police detain him on suspicion of Resistance activity; lacking evidence, they acquit him, yet he is still interned. In the camp he and a young Communist work out an escape plan, but Gerbier is moved to Paris before they can carry it out, and while he awaits Gestapo questioning he gets away. Back in Marseille he finds his network again: Félix Lepercq, Guillaume Vermersch, known as Le Bison, and Claude Ullmann, known as Le Masque. Félix recruits a former pilot, Jean-François Jardie, who is fond of risk. Jean-François then calls on Luc, his elder brother, a philosopher of wide reputation.
