Arthur Miller

Arthur Miller was an American playwright who wrote screenplays, novels and short stories, often drawing on American history and his own life. Born in New York City, he wrote his first plays at the University of Michigan, where No Villain brought him the Avery Hopwood Award in Drama in 1937. His Broadway debut, The Man Who Had All the Luck, lasted four performances in 1944, but All My Sons, staged by Elia Kazan, became a hit in 1947, and both men won Tonys. Salesman opened at the Morosco Theatre in 1949 for 742 performances, taking six Tonys and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and he later directed it in Chinese in Beijing in 1983. The Crucible won the 1953 Tony for Best Play, and A View from the Bridge ran during the 1955-56 season. The Price was his last unqualified American hit, running from 1968 to 1969. He wrote the screenplay for The Misfits (1961), shot by John Huston.
