Plot summary
In 1960s Shirleyville, Vermont, sisters Merricat and Constance share the family mansion with their ailing Uncle Julian. Constance has stayed inside since she was cleared in the poisoning deaths of their parents six years earlier. Each week Merricat goes to the village for food and endures taunts from locals; she also buries protective charms around the house to ward off evil. Helen Clarke, a family friend, visits regularly and presses Constance to step back into the world, which frightens Merricat. Then their estranged cousin Charles shows up. He flirts with Constance, disrespects Julian, and needles Merricat while showing interest in the family safe. His arrival upsets the delicate order the sisters have built.
