Plot summary
Pete McKell, an American travel journalist, joins a small tour group on a crocodile-watching river cruise through Kakadu National Park. Kate Ryan, a wildlife researcher, is their guide. After a passenger named Everett sees a flare far off, Kate takes the boat upstream to investigate. The passengers grow uneasy as the landscape thickens and they realize they have entered unmapped territory. They find a wrecked boat with no one aboard. A large shadow beneath the surface strikes their boat and damages it. Kate turns the sinking craft toward a small mudbank in the river. She tells the group that a large crocodile holds this territory, and that they must leave before the rising tide covers the island.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Greg McLean based the man-eater on Sweetheart, a real giant male saltwater crocodile that attacked boats in the late 1970s but was never responsible for an attack on a human.
- McLean was thrown off his own crocodile project in June 2001, replaced by Kimble Rendall in an attempt to salvage it. When it collapsed anyway he picked a smaller film for his directing debut instead, and that film was Wolf Creek.
