Plot summary
Caesar leads a colony of intelligent apes who live hidden in the Muir Woods, and he has tried to keep peace with humans. A military faction called Alpha-Omega, helped by apes who once followed Koba, hunts the colony under a Colonel's command. Soldiers assault an ape outpost; the apes drive them back, and Caesar frees his human captives as a gesture of peace. Caesar's son Blue Eyes comes back from a scouting trip with news of an oasis, a possible new home for the tribe. When the Colonel's soldiers raid the colony, Caesar leaves Cornelius in Lake's care and sets out with Maurice, Rocket, and Luca to find the Colonel, while the tribe journeys toward the oasis.

- Director Matt Reeves said the treacherous apes nicknamed "donkeys" in the film are named partly after the video game character Donkey Kong, and partly because the humans use them as "pack mules".
