Plot summary
Ellie Linton, a high school student in the rural New South Wales town of Wirrawee, sets out with six friends for a camping trip in a remote valley they call Hell's Gate. On the second night, she wakes to find the sky crowded with military aircraft. Back in Wirrawee, the group finds houses abandoned and the power, phones and internet dead. From a hilltop, the group sees lights only at the hospital and the showground. There, townspeople are being held by a foreign military force. Soldiers chase the friends into a backyard, and in the confusion two of them, Lee Takkam and Robyn Mathers, are separated from the rest.

- The film's DVD sold almost 105,000 copies in its first week, a record for an Australian independently produced and financed film; it beat George Miller's Happy Feet, which had sold about 95,000 copies in its first week in 2007.
- Rather than destroying full-size structures, the production filmed the explosions of the house and the bridge scaled-down at Terrey Hills in northern Sydney.
- Raymond Terrace, picked as a major location because it was "a great country town", stood in for the fictional Wirrawee: its historic King Street was transformed into the town's main street, with set areas including the Wirrawee Cinema and the Lee family's Thai restaurant.
