Plot summary
An earthquake cracks through downtown Los Angeles on the morning Mike Roark, who heads the city's Office of Emergency Management, is on vacation with his daughter, Kelly. The quake leaves little visible damage, but utility workers are killed in a storm drain at MacArthur Park, and Mike wants the nearby subway lines shut down. MTA chairman Stan Olber sees no threat to the trains. Mike and his colleague Gator Harris enter the drain themselves; the tunnel shakes and fills with hot gases, and they barely get out. Seismologist Amy Barnes is called in, and she believes the quake opened a fissure in the fault line that lets magma rise toward the surface.
