Plot summary
Ace, a twelve-year-old boy, moves with his mother Susan to Lugosi County, where Susan joins the staff of the local high school as a music teacher; the school is set to shut at the end of the year. Ace drums well but panics in front of a crowd, and the principal, Barry Hickman, doubts that his students can play. Susan enters the school in a talent contest whose prize would keep it open. A letter brings word that Ace's grandfather has died and left him a dog, Fang, delivered in a trunk. The dog talks, shuns sunlight and lives on jelly pudding. A television interview about a dog in Transylvania convinces Dr. Warhol that Fang's DNA could yield a cream that halts skin aging, and she sends her helper Frank to find him.
