Plot summary
To the people around him, Simon seems an ordinary biology teacher. Much of his spare time goes to caring for his mother, Helga, who has Alzheimer's, and he tries to keep her indoors by putting her in a contraption like a straitjacket tied to several large balloons. He also believes he is a vampire with an overwhelming thirst for human blood that must be satisfied, and he spends his time on sites where women who want to die can be found. One of the women he finds there, Jellyfish, is led to believe that she and Simon will kill each other.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Shunji Iwai got the idea for Vampire from a serial killer who was "more like a friend to his victims", and he liked the question of whether victims who help a killer kill them make it murder or aided suicide.
- Iwai wrote the screenplay himself, but because he struggled with spoken English dialogue he asked his performers not to follow the script too closely and to be more spontaneous so the dialogue would sound natural.
- Kevin Zegers was asked to appear in Vampire after Shunji Iwai met him while dining with friends; Zegers accepted straight away and was one of the first actors brought in.
